Information Security Certificate Students Receive Award

Four students from the Information Security & Risk Management certificate program were recognized with the Up-and-Coming Information Security Professional award at the recent (ISC)² Americas Information Security Leadership Awards conference.

The winning students were Jennifer Chermoshnyuk, Patrick Coleman, Dennis Dore and David Krasnove. All are 2016 graduates of the ISRM certificate program, which is offered by UW Professional & Continuing Education.

We have to remember what a big field information security is and why a broader perspective is so important.

Patrick Coleman, Certificate Graduate

The four were recognized for their certificate group project, “Information Security in the Legal Industry: How to Make a Case for and Not Out of Cybersecurity.” The team explored the business culture, information security practices and potential risks at several Seattle law firms. The students conducted a survey and held a panel discussion that included both legal and information security professionals from the firms. As a final piece to the project, the team prepared information security program recommendations that emphasized risk remediation and business practicality.

The winning project’s biggest challenge reflected the primary focus of the UW certificate program: how to identify and solve a problem that spans technology, risk and compliance and often has significant legal implications.

According to the students, the project and award embodies these key concepts. “Information security professionals need to be continuously learning,” Coleman said. “We have to remember what a big field information security is and why a broader perspective is so important.”
